In the play-off final, however, Swansea City proved too strong over two games. After traveling to Canterbury City in the first round and beating them 6-0, Colchester United were beaten 2-0 at Plainmoor in the second round. Torquay United finished their first season in the Football Conference in third place behind Aldershot Town and Cambridge United. Torquay came close to promotion in both the 1962/63 and 1963/64 seasons, finishing third and sixth consecutively.
